Death of “El Mencho”: List of roads blocked in Mexico TODAY February 22

Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes “El Mencho” died after an operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco; his capture sparked nationwide blockades

On the afternoon of  Sunday, February 22,  the  death of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes “El Mencho” ,  alleged leader of the  Jalisco New Generation Cartel , was confirmed, provoking violent reactions in various parts of the country, including the closure and blocking of several highways. The events took place in the municipality of  Tapalpa , in  Jalisco , as part of an operation by the  Ministry of National Defense  with military intelligence work from the  National Intelligence Center  and the  Attorney General’s Office. 

“El Mencho” was arrested, but gunshot wounds caused his death during his air transport to Mexico City.  Authorities report that two other members of this criminal organization were also apprehended, and that weapons and armored vehicles, such as rocket launchers capable of shooting down aircraft and destroying armored vehicles, were seized.

Mexico’s Security Command reported   that there are currently  7 road blockades  in the state of  Jalisco , 3 of which are about to be cleared: “Federal and state forces are maintaining the operational deployment to clear roads and guarantee the safety of the population.”

Pablo Lemus , governor of the state of  Jalisco,  issued a  red security code  for the people of Jalisco, as well as the cancellation of in-person classes throughout the state for all levels due to the events that occurred this afternoon.

“We remain on Code Red, we reiterate the recommendation to avoid leaving your homes, clashes are happening in several federal entities; in a few moments the Federation will give official information on the events.”
