Exercises to unblock sciatica

Sciatica is pain that occurs along the sciatic nerve. This nerve begins in the lower back and branches through the hips and buttocks to the feet. Sciatica usually affects only one side of the body.

Although the pain associated with this nerve can be severe, most cases resolve with treatments that do not require surgery.

Symptoms

You may feel pain along this nerve, from your lower back to your buttocks and the back of your thighs. This pain can range from a mild sensation to excruciating. Sometimes it can feel like a jolt or an electric shock. It usually only affects one side of the body.

Causes

  • Herniated discs.
  • Bone spurs.

Risk factors

Age . One of the most common causes is the changes that occur in the spine as a result of aging. These changes can include herniated disks and bone spurs.

Obesity . Excess weight puts a strain on the spine, which can contribute to spinal changes that cause sciatica.

Profession . If you have a job that requires you to carry heavy loads, twist your back, or drive for long periods of time, this can lead to the development of sciatica.

Sitting for long periods of time.  People who remain in this position for long periods of time or lead a sedentary lifestyle are more likely to suffer from this problem than active people.
