

{"id":780,"date":"2024-09-25T02:59:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-25T01:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/?p=780"},"modified":"2024-09-25T02:59:40","modified_gmt":"2024-09-25T01:59:40","slug":"once-extinct-in-the-wild-rare-bird-released-back-into-nature-for-first-time-in-40-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/?p=780","title":{"rendered":"Once extinct in the wild, rare bird released back into nature for first time in 40 years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Conservationists are celebrating as a species of bird has been reintroduced into the wild for the first time in four decades, after going extinct in the wild.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The the sihek, also known as the Guam kingfisher, has been extinct in the wild since 1988, the result of predation by the invasive brown tree snake,\u00a0according to a press release\u00a0from the Zoological Society of London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Native to Guam and culturally important to the native Chamorro, the bird species has been listed under the Guam Endangered Species Act in 1982 and on the U.S. Endangered Species List since 1984.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"514\" src=\"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-35.png 768w, https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-35-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, there has been a global effort to conserve this species with the hopes of one day reintroducing them to their natural habitat \u2014 and recently, those efforts finally paid off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to ZSL, six&nbsp;sihek are officially living in the wild after being released into the tropical forests of Palmyra Atoll. The historic release was hailed as a major moment for both the conservation efforts and the local culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a momentous day that has been decades in the making,\u201d said Professor John Ewen of ZSL\u2019s&nbsp;Institute of Zoology&nbsp;and Sihek Recovery Program Team Chair&nbsp; Wildlife globally is under threat, and the success of seeing these birds fly in the wild once more highlights just how zoos, scientists and conservationists \u2013 working with governments and decision-makers \u2013 have the power to protect species and take huge steps in bringing them back from the very brink of extinction.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z3fngujktpo?si=Urd6u9ufHDi2RCCm\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Guam Sihek, a symbol of our island\u2019s beauty, with their cerulean blue and cinnamon coloration mirroring our ocean blue water and red-orange sunsets, have been achieving the seemingly impossible,\u201d said Yolonda Topasna, DOAG Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Program coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir return to the wild is a testament to our people\u2019s spirit and our commitment to preserving our heritage,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"528\" src=\"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-36.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-36.png 768w, https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-36-300x206.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nine birds \u2014 four female and five male \u2014 were hand-reared for the past several months at the Sedgwick County Zoo, and each was given a health exam ahead of the release. Teams will monitor their movements through tiny radio trackers attached to each bird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the species went extinct due to predation from the brown tree snake, the Palmyra Atoll, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service National Wildlife Refuge, was chosen as the site for their release because it is protected and predator-free, ZSL writes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hope is that the sihek will thrive and establish a breeding population on the atoll, with the ultimate goal of releasing the species to Guam once they have the invasive snake population under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" src=\"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-37.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-784\" srcset=\"https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-37.png 768w, https:\/\/amazing.greensmartmobility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/image-37-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s amazing that the sihek has been reintroduced into the wild after four decades!
