Trimmed beard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A worn wooden cane resting beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kind of man who never raised his voice, yet somehow made everyone around him speak softer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exactly noon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until the bikers arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six motorcycles roared into the parking lot like thunder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diner doors swung open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heavy boots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leather vests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loud laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kind of men who enjoyed being feared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their leader, Rex, spotted the old man immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something about calm dignity irritated him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smirked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walked straight over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hand slapped the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA king without a kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man never looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bikers laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex leaned closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan\u2019t hear me, Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The silence only fueled him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he grabbed the cane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One hard yank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The table jerked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coffee splashed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A glass shattered on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diner erupted with laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex spun the cane through the air like a trophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then his eyes slowly settled on something hidden inside Rex\u2019s leather collar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A faded silver hawk patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moment he saw it\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man reached into his jacket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pulled out a small black key fob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bikers burst out laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex grinned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCalling life support?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man pressed a button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quiet click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he raised it to his ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diner began to fall silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then three words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBring him here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He ended the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex laughed again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But nobody else did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because outside\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tires screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One black SUV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four armored vehicles slid into the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The windows were dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The license plates were government plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diner went completely silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doors opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Men in dark suits stepped out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not security guards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something much higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their eyes scanned the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And every single one of them moved directly toward Booth Seven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex\u2019s grin vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man slowly stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without his cane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Straight as a soldier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the suited men entered first and immediately stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His face went pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in front of the entire diner\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He saluted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every other man behind him did the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man finally looked at Rex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then at the silver hawk patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice was calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deadly calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A longer pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man took one slow step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His gaze never left Rex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI designed that patch.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI pinned it onto every member of the unit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd only one man ever wore that exact silver hawk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diner was so quiet that nobody dared breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rex\u2019s lips parted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old man stopped directly in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
